What:  Gates Lake Community Park Planting Project

Where:  Gates Lake Community Park 9184 Portage Road, Birken

When: Saturday, August 27 9:00 am – 12 noon

Why: Planting of 21 Douglas maple trees and 243 shrubs and ground covers as part of the CN EcoConnexions from the Ground Up grant funds received in 2016 for beautification of the park.

The Gates Lake Planting Project is the final stage of landscaping improvements planned for this community gathering and greenspace.

In May, the SLRD received funding from CN EcoConnexions from the Ground Up program for landscaping enhancements for Gates Lake Community Park. Aerating and top dressing the grassy field areas has been completed. The second phase of the project is the planting of native species - the grant require that the work be completed with the help of community volunteers. Happily, Gates Lake Park boasts a supportive community whose energy we hope to tap, to bring this project to fruition.

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has worked closely with Tom Barratt Ltd. Landscape Architects to create a planting plan that will enhance the park.  The Gardener’s Yard Inc. will assist with placing of the plants as per the plan and we are relying upon volunteers to assist with the actual planting of the trees, shrubs and ground covers.

Volunteers will be provided with snacks and refreshments.  Bring your gardening gloves and shovels and let’s work together on beautifying Gates Lake Community Park.
